One of the main features of the architecture of the Central Lutheran Church is the mix of vertical and horizontal lines created by the wood strips used on the face. The church tower was constructed in a traditional all rectangular shape, but only two of the sides are covered leaving the other two sides open. This provided strength for the tower, but kept a light and airy feeling.
The tower, which was sufferning from decay, had to be removed for safety sake and is now only about 25% of its original height. In addition, the cross was removed. A fund raiser is underway to raise funds to replace the tower with a new one designed by architects trained by Piertro Belluschi, the original architect.
