Side 1 of the historical marker: JEFFERSON COUNTY - Formed in 1801 from Berkeley. Named for Thomas Jefferson. Home of Generals Gates, Darke, and Charles Lee. Here four companies of Washington's men organized. Shepherdstown was strongly urged as the sea of the National Capitol.
Side 2 of the historical marker: STATE OF VIRGINIA - Named for Queen Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen of England. Site of the first permanent settlement in America, 1607. One of the 13 original colonies. The Old Dominion is the birthplace of eight United States Presidents.
