Cumberland Gap, Tennessee was named for Prince William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland. It is located at the southern end of the Cumberland Gap mountain pass.

Cumberland Gap, Tennessee has been a village for over 200 years. It was contested by both sides during the Civil War. It has the distinction of having been in three different states (Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia as boundary lines changed over the years.
