Troy Hill is a very old neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Mostly settled by german immigrants in the late 1800's, it is a tight-knit residential area, with beautiful views spanning the city skyline and river below.

The sign says:

For the dawn of wisdom, love and peace
of brotherhood with true command
of freedom without lawlessness
the stars and stripes shall forever stand

in noon of progress may we toll
with sacrifice and courage strong
as now with hope we build a shrine
which to the ages shall belong

we bow in memory's twilight hour
to noble deeds by by firefighters done
and give a pledge to flower
the good they have bravely begun

led by the stars of right and truth
in an onward march to aid mankind
our flag with duty ever seeks
the world in fellowship to bind

another plaque, this one on the ground behind the memorial, reads:

this monument was dedicated by troy hill's fire fighters to honor all fire fighters. They were common men dedicated heroic and honor bound. In 2005 after 130 years of service, the city of pittsburgh closed the troy hill station. Those responsible were laggards, dastards, scallawags, and scoundrels. They were cowards, guilty of every crime not requiring courage. Auf Weidersein.
