Site of well documented gunfight considered to be one of the few recorded shootings in the history of the Wild West that consisted of a one-on-one pistol quickdraw duel in a public place, in the manner later made iconic by countless dime novels, radio operas, and Western films. Detailed in an article in Harper's in 1867, which made Wild Bill Hickok a household name.

Be careful if visiting as the plaques are located in the path of traffic on the street around the square. Although the road is not a very busy one.
