A portrait bust of Governor Hugh J. Gallen dressed in a jacket, striped neck tie and a shirt, looking slightly to proper right. The bust is placed atop a two-tiered base surrounded by curbing.

An automobile dealer in nearby Littleton, Gallen was the first Democrat elected to the State Legislature from that district (1973). Elected governor in 1978, he served two terms as Governor, but lost his bid for a third term.

In November 1982 Gallen became seriously ill with a rare blood infection and died a few days before the inauguration of his successor, John H. Sununu, the only New Hampshire governor to die while still in office.

He is remembered for having called out the National Guard in 1979 to help protect the nuclear power plant at Seabrook against anti-nuclear protesters.
