Kyle Cummings found out about the sad condition that Indiana's Highest Point was in from his scoutmaster who is a member of the Highpointers Club, a club where members try to visit all 50 states' high points. Kyle and his friends worked on securing the OK from the owner to transform the once overgrown area to a place that is peaceful and welcoming to the visitor.
I had made a trek out here before Kyle's Eagle Project. At that time the access road was muddy, and if it had been raining, you ran the risk of getting stuck. In order the reach the summit, you had to bravely climb over an old stile and then bushwack your way to the opening in the small forest that rests by the cornfields. There in the midst of overgrown shrubbery you would find the fence post and cairn that marked the highest point.
The drive is now gravel. The stile is gone- replaced with a gravel/dirt path to the summit. Once you are there. there stands the cairn- as well as a picnic table, a bench, a short walking trail- and a newly painted wooden sign. You can't miss the summit register/logbook. Kyle took his family's mailbox. Encased it in brick and masonry. Therein lays the 2 registers. One being full. The newer one is getting lots of visitors.
Thank you, Kyle, and crew. As well as the owner of this land to allow the public to access it.
