The EKR began opened in 1867, mostly as a means to transport coal from the hills of eastern Kentucky to the Ohio River. The track has been abandoned since 1933. The Argillite Tunnel can be seen off KY 207, just before the intersection of KY 1. Part of KY 207 was actually laid right over the old rail bed, as were many roads in the area. Instead of KY 207 using the tunnel, the road meanders up and over the tunnel. There is a dirt/gravel pull-off where KY 207 starts its ascent. The old rail bed and tunnel can be pretty muddy at times, so be careful. The north end of the tunnel is the only end that is easily accessible. The southern end has been filled in, and is very dangerous. Just keep in mind that this railroad has been abandoned for over 70 years. Trying to walk through the tunnel is not a good idea.
Extra information for serious rail fans.
Most of the old EKR rail bed runs parallel with KY 1. Parts of the rail bed were used as road beds for sections of KY routes 207, 3306, & 773. The Argillite Tunnel is the only tunnel still visible.
