In the north wall there is an alabaster slab inscribed to Robert Sapcote d.1600. This was discovered and reset in the 1886 restoration of the Church.
The local story is as follows: Robert Sapcote was a notorious gambler and poor loser who had his guests waylaid and robbed of their winnings as they left nearby Elton Hall. He used to reside in the building and entertain from within the grand estate. The ghost of Sir Robert is said to haunt the area and is accompanied by a large black watch dog which rolls over and over before him!
