From the Cedar Key School website:
Cedar Key is a small fishing village located on Way Key just south of the mouth of the Suwannee River on Florida's west coast. Cedar Key High is the smallest public high school in the state of Florida. We are located by the water tower.
Our school was originally founded as a private school in the 1800's. The land upon which the school is located was donated to the county with the understanding that the grave of the donor would be maintained. This grave is located at the rear of the present gymnasium.
Prior to 1896 the city of Cedar Key was located on Asenta Otie Island. Faber and Eagle Pencil Companies operated factories on Asenta Otie. This was because of the vast stand of cedar that covered the islands and the nearby coast . Cedar Key was the major source of pencils for the world at that time. On September 23rd, 1896 a hurricane wiped out the town. All that remains of the original town is a graveyard. Buildings were floated by barge across the channel separating Asentie Otie and Way Key and the town was reestablished on Way Key. Sadly to say Faber and the Eagle Pencil Company moved elsewhere, leaving the forests depleted.
We are considered an isolated school. The nearest town with a school is over 30 miles away. Each year two festivals are held on our island. The Cedar Key Seafood Festival is held in October, and the Cedar Key Arts Festival is held in April. Thousand of visitors come to our island to enjoy our seafood delicacies and view artwork by artists from throughout the United States.
We have had people from throughout the world come for a visit and decide to stay. We have an art colony and retirement homes that dot the islands. Our school is growing. The image at the top of this page is located above the main entrance to our school. It is a stain glass window, of which we are very proud. This stain glass window survived the fire a few years ago. Our mascot is the shark.
