Work started on the bridge in 1829. After a disaster later that year which washed the new bridge away a start was made on the bridge we see today. The bridge was completed on 7th July 1831 and opened as a toll bridge being part of the Staindrop to Greta Bridge Turnpike. There is a interesting notice board on the tollhouse which will give the reader an idea of its history.
