This milestone is a Listed Building protected by law. These were commonly erected as part of the turnpike road system. The turnpike which passed through Staindrop ran from Bowes (then in the North Riding of Yorkshire) to Durham - the stone gives the distances for both. The A688 follows the course of the Durham to Bowes Turnpike road.
