On the east side of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is an 8' bust of Dr. King. The park was renamed in his honor on January 25, 1977, but the bust and memorial wasn't erected until October 1983. It was sculpted by John Wilson and was intended as an interpretation "which would sum up the larger-than-life ideas" of Dr. King and capture his "inner meaning" rather than be simply a life-like representation.
Below the bust is a plaque with the beginning of his "I have a dream" speech.
