The nave of the church is Saxon and evidence of Saxon windows can be seen above the later Norman arches in the walls of the aisles. The importance of this church was such that it was enlarged into an abbey. During the Norman period the church was again re-designed. More work was undertaken in the 14th century with the enlargement of the south aisle by Ralph Neville to form a Lady Chapel. His mother is buried here as where other Neville ladies. The middle ages saw more changes to the church with a clerestory being built above the main aisle. The pitch of the Norman roof can still be seen today. The tower was raised to its present height and the chancel lengthened. In Edwardian times the roof of the chancel was decorated and a new floor of Frosterley marble laid.
