Apart from a few mountainbikers and kayakers, this awesome sight remains unknown to most travellers passing through the Central Plateau via the Desert Road.
Out in the middle of nowhere, the mighty Tongariro River is squeezed through a narrow gap, so narrow you could almost jump over it. It is possible to drive across the bridge without seeing the sight that lies beneath you. Stop and walk onto the bridge, look down, you'll be amazed.
Turn off the main highway at Tree Trunk Gorge Road, drive down the narrow no-exit access road and discover this "best kept secret."
Warning: Stay on the road or bridge. Do not try to climb down.
