Charles Sanscrainte served as a Private in the Union Army in Company B, 15th Michigan Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 22, 1864 at Atlanta, Georgia for voluntarily scaling the enemy's breastworks and signaled to his commanding officer in charge. He also captured the colors of the 5th Texas Regiment (C.S.A.) in single combat.

Sanscrainte is buried in section JJ of United German and French Cemetery, also known as Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
