John C. Segelhurst served as a Sergeant in Company B of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Hatchers Run, Virgina on February 6, 1865. Under a heavy fire from the enemy, he carried off the field a commissioned officer who was severely wounded and also led a charge on the enemy's rifle pits. His Medal was awarded to him on January 3, 1906. He was one of twelve 1st New Jersey Cavalry soldiers who was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War.
Segelhurst was born in Buffalo June 1, 1841 and entered service from Jersey City, NJ. He died May 10, 1907 and is buried in section 14 of Forest Lawn Cemetery.
