The Canal Fest in the Tonawandas has taken place during the third week in July since 1983. It is located in close proximity to the end of the Erie Canal, completed in 1825 as a means of transporting goods via water to the west.
The Canal Fest has grown over the years and includes many activities. The most popular is the craft show that occurs Saturday and Sunday on the streets surrounding the main festival grounds. Others are the diaper derby, Miss Canal Fest pageant, Canal Fest parade, 4-mile running race, a boat building contest, rubber duck race, and fireworks finale.
On the Tonawanda side of the canal are all the rides and carnival-supplied food. There is a wide variety of rides, from the tame for the kids to the wild for the adults. There are also a handful of local organizations selling food and beverages as well. On the North Tonawanda side are more local organizations selling food, nightly live entertainment, the beer tent, and gambling tent.
