This water wheel is actually a replica of an old nearby mill, and currently turns a number of gears and belts ...which eventually rotate the roof of a nearby pavillion.
A sign nearby reads as follows:
"A replica of the mill operating near this site from the early 1800's until 1910. Behind the waterwheel is the 'trail race' for the mill which was located near the flyer side. These words are painted on a 23" white pine board sawed on that mill. In addition to the water powered mills, portable steam powered "jack-pot" mills were moved to woods lots and cut materials for specific buildings. Waste slabs provided fuel for the engine that powered the saw.
Many such mills opered in this area when Pennsylvania was the world's leading producer of lumber"
