The Keyser Township Schools have a long history in the area. They were initiated in 1824, when the Indiana General Assembly adopted a formal system for the administration of schools.

Three Township trustees were assigned to create Districts within their Township. These Districts elected "sub-trustees" who administered the schools in their district. This created a loose, decentralized system in which each district was administered by the very people it served.

This is the environment in which the Keyser Township schools were created. Keyser Township had several schools, of which two buildings are still extant: Keyser Township No. 8 (this one) and Keyser Township District 5 Schools. Township schools generally taught through 8th grade. Students who wished a higher education went to "seminaries" (now high schools) in Auburn (the County Seat).

The Township schools of both Keyser Township and Butler Township were discontinued with the consolidation of the Garrett, Keyser, and Butler school systems into the Garrett-Keyser-Butler School System in 1952. Shortly thereafter, a new Elementary School was built. The J. E. Ober School was a model of modern education, and in 1969 was enlarged to accommodate the growing needs of the area.

Once the new Elementary school was constructed, the Township schools fell into disuse. Many of them were torn down, but the Keyser Township School No. 8 was "reformed" into an Apartment Building, which is its present-day use.
