There are two options to reach the crash site. One is to park at the end of Flowers Road and climb 4.5 to 5 miles up the Flowers Trail. With an elevation gain of about 1600 feet, this route passes through mostly forested terrain. While there are some good views (Beaver Park for example), the views found along option two are much more spectacular.
Option two begins along the Crown Point Road at the Brown's Lake Trailhead. The trail starts at 10,480 feet, and within the first 1.5 miles climbs to 11,280 feet, just below Crown Point. (800 ft./1.5 mi--- 530 ft/mi). Along this moderate climb, the unobstructed views of the Medicine Bow Range to the West are spectacular. The trail then drops off a few hundred feet in the next ½ mile only to climb back up to a peak of 11,450 feet. At about three miles into the hike, the Brown's Lake Trail intersects the Flowers Trail near the remains of an old sheep herder's cabin.
From this junction, follow the Flowers Trail to the East. The views of the Mummy Range to the south become spectacular. The trail runs mostly parallel to the ridgeline on the south slope at roughly 11,200 feet, and is quite exposed in many places. Roughly 2 to 2.5 miles from the Brown's Lake Trail, the Flowers Trail climbs up and over the ridge at a small depression in the ridgeline. There, the trail takes a sharp bend to the left and heads immediately downhill. At the bend, leave the trail and continue straight ahead into the woods staying just below the ridgeline on the north slope. The crash site is just a few hundred yards from the bend in the trail.
