The First century entry into the town of Colchester is partially under the Hole in the Wall pub, but the guardroom and one of the arched doors still survive intact. It seems to have been built as a free-standing structure at the foundation of the Roman city, and was built in to the wall when the city was reconstructed after its destruction by Boudica in 60AD. It originally consisted of two large gates for vehicles and two smaller gates for pedestrians.
