Corps of Discovery II – Travelers’ Rest is located in Travelers’ Rest State Park, Lolo, Missoula County, Montana. It is in the NGS database at PID = DH9363 (visit link) . The six-inch commemorative disk is on a grass island surrounded by a parking lot and an entry access road. The parking area is located on the north side of and approximately 500 feet from Lolo Creek; the main state park facilities are located on the south side of Lolo Creek. There will soon be a bridge and trail constructed which will connect the parking area with the facilities across the creek. The Western Chapter of the Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors set the disk on September 23, 2004, and the association intends to dedicate the disk in June, 2006. The disk is flush with and inside a 12-inch diameter concrete cylinder, which is raised approximately 0.1 feet above the surrounding ground surface. It is located 2.9 feet south of the back of sidewalk, 22.3 feet southeast of the centerline of the concrete path between two handicap parking signs and 9.0 feet southeast of the most easterly handicap parking sign. The disk does not have any identifying stamping other than the standard design elements of the commemorative series of disks: CORPS OF DISCOVERY II – 200 YEARS TO THE FUTURE – PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP. To reach from downtown Missoula, MT, travel southeast on Broadway Ave. for one block, turn right onto Higgins Ave. travel south for 0.5 miles, turn right onto Brooks St. (US Hwy 93); continue on U.S. Hwy 93 (Brooks St.) for approximately 10.5 miles to Lolo, MT, continue south through town to the junction with US Hwy 12, turn right on US Hwy 12, travel west 0.35 miles to the entrance of Travelers’ Rest State Park. There are no informational signs, as the park has not officially opened on the north side of Lolo Creek at this writing. The entrance is approximately 250 feet west of Guy’s Lolo Creek Steakhouse and directly across from the Holt Heritage Museum and has a green steel double gate at the entrance. From this point travel south on the access road for approximately 1,400 feet and then turn left into a parking area with a landscaped island with handicap parking on the north side of the island. The monument is located on this island in front of the handicap parking.

“Travelers’ Rest State Park marks the location of a centuries-old Native American campsite which Lewis and Clark used in 1805 and 1806. They called the nearby creek "Travellers Rest." In Summer, 2002, archeologists found evidence of the Corps of Discovery's latrine and central fire, positioning the park as one of the few sites in the nation with physical confirmation of the group's visit--a truly unique designation.” Taken from (visit link) . NOTE: If, as you approach Lolo from Missoula, you follow the signs to Travelers’ Rest State Park, you will end up at the visitors’ center about 0.5 miles south of the US Highway 93 West turnoff to the northern section of the park, and about 0.25 miles south of the mark, as the crow flies. Also note: The published coordinates are based upon an RTK tie to Missoula CORS station MSOL. They will be updated by 3-5.5 hour static observations later. However, they should be within a couple centimeters of the final published coordinates.

This information is current as of 07/16/2005.
