The water tower got its name from the Rev Canon Irvine who, complaining at the proposed building of the structure, likened it to a huge elephant from London Zoo that had recently been sold to P.T. Barnum. The building was opened on September 27th, 1883, twenty months after construction began, co-incidently the gestation period of an elephant!
The height of the tower is 40.08 mtrs (131 ft) and it holds 1069 cubic mtr (37,800 cubic ft) of water.
