Corps of Discovery II – Monticello, VA, is located on the West lawn of Monticello (Thomas Jefferson’s home), Albemarle County, VA, about two miles southeast of the center of Charlottesville, Charlottesville County, VA. The 12-inch commemorative brass disk is located near the west end of the lawn on the west side of the mansion. It is monumented flush with the surface at the edge of the lawn and just inside the oval gravel path around the lawn, about 330 feet west-southwest of the porch on the west face of the mansion. It was dedicated on January 14, 2003, as part of the “Bicentennial Inaugural: Jefferson’s West” national signature event. The disk does not have any identifying stamping other than the standard design elements of the commemorative series of disks: CORPS OF DISCOVERY II – 200 YEARS TO THE FUTURE – PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP. To reach from Exit 121 off Interstate 64 east of Charlottesville, VA, go south on VA Route 20 for about 0.5 miles to a stoplight. Continue south on Rte 20 for about 0.2 miles to VA Route 53, Thomas Jefferson Parkway. Turn left and go easterly on the Parkway for about 1.75 miles to the signed turnoff for Monticello. Follow signs to the parking area and ticket kiosk. Park, purchase a ticket for the mansion and grounds tour, and take the shuttle bus to the mansion. The shuttle bus stop is on the east side of the mansion. Pack westerly around the south side of the mansion to the West Lawn. Walk west and north along the gravel path that borders the south side of the West Lawn to the western edge of the lawn and the marker on the right. There is no way to get onto the West Lawn of Monticello without buying a ticket and joining a timed tour of the mansion (although you don’t actually have to take the tour once the shuttle bus drops you off).
