The station has been converted into a restaurant. Several railway cars have been added to the original building for "atmosphere".
From Wikipedia - The San Juan Capistrano Amtrak station is a train station in San Juan Capistrano, California, United States served by Amtrak, the national railroad passenger system, and Metrolink, a commuter railroad.
From insiderpages.com comes this review - On a train you see lots of the backs of things: of houses, backyards, factories, warehouses...That's why it's such a shock to come to a screeching halt at the San Juan Capistrano train station. Have I fallen asleep, am I dreaming!? It's like fairyland! The train station is in the middle of the Los Rios Historic District of old California houses surrounded by trees and hollyhocks and dozens of other flowers. To describe more would be like giving away the ending of a movie.
The San Juan Capistrano train station serves both Amtrak and Metrolink. I found the train agents in the depot to be knowledgeable and helpful. Capistrano is a great place to go for the day. Walk uphill and visit the Mission. Roam the historic district. There are several restaurants and antique shops closeby.......
From sanjuancapistrano.net - It [the station] was completed October 8, 1894 and was written that: "Old San Juan will soon blossom with the finest depot on the Santa Fe system. We invite the architecturalistic to come view this unique building illustrated with arches, a dome 40 feet high with a mission bell, dainty ticket office and quaint old fashion fireplace that will capture the tenderfoot as he breathes the balmy sea air." The statement was by columnist Dr. Alexander Hamilton Rowan on April 14, 1894 in the Santa Ana Standard, a weekly paper.
