Between 1827 and 1856 Captain Henry W. Bayfield undertook the first complete survey of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. His survey produced charts that were the navigation standard for the Gulf and River until the 20th century. His work laid the basis for the Hydrographic Service of Canada.
