University of Zagreb was established on September 23, 1669. Emperor and King Leopold I Habsburg issued a decree granting the status and privileges of a university to the Jesuit Academy of the Royal Free City of Zagreb. On October 19, 1874 the modern University of Zagreb was established. Today, University of Zagreb is the oldest Croatian university in continuous operation and also the oldest university in South-Eastern Europe. The University consists of 29 faculties, three art academies and the Center for Croatian Studies. University of Zagreb is also a strongly research-oriented institution, contributing with over 50 percent to the total research output of the Croatia.
