Today Chimacum is a crossroads community at the junction of bucolic Center and Beaver valleys. South of town sheep, cattle, and horses stand in pastures; ducks paddle on ponds; and old barns complement new metal sheds.
In 1853 William Bishop and William Eldridge, together with five crewmates from a British man-of-war, jumped ship in Victoria, BC and rowed to the Olympic Peninsala. The two men claimed land in Center Valley, started a series of business ventures, and raised large families whose members eventually intermarried. In the 1920s author Betty MacDonald came as a young bride to Beaver Valley to raise chickens. Her biting memoir "The EGG and I" included the characters Ma and Pa Kettle, portrayals that local people still resent.
