All craters on Venus, the Roman goddess of love and arts, are named after women. This crater is named after the American author Gertrude Stein who chronicled the early 20th century abstract painting movement in Paris. Her best known work is "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," which is not an autobiography but was written from the perspective of her life-long companion. For more information about Gertrude Stein, the author, see her wikipedia entry.

The Stein crater is a medium-sized crater on the southern hemisphere of Venus.
