This building was built in 1806 by the Duke of Bedford; originally the ground floor was a market house, with a meeting hall above. The building is now the town’s library. The clock tower was built when the building was erected; the clock has recently been renovated after working for 199 years. On top of the clock tower is a weather vane which takes the form of a camel.
Camelford has nothing to do with camels; the town is named after the River Camel which runs through the town.
