The ST. LOUIS CHURCH, SW, corner of Eighth and Walnut Sts., is a 5-story
limestone building, Florentine in style, that also houses business offices of
the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Cincinnati. The building was dedicated
in 1930. Because of its location in the heart of the business district,
St. Louis Church provides 14 masses on holy days. It has two chapels--one
on the first floor and one in the basement. Other activities housed here
include the business office of St. Joseph Cemetery; an information department;
an evening school for Catholic converts; and a Catholic lending library.
Before the present building went up, St. Ludwig's Kirche (Roman Catholic)
occupied the structure that had been built here in 1870 for a Campbellite group.
Cincinnati was an early stronghold of the Campbellites, a sect that sought to
return to the more primitive aspects of Christian teaching. In 1837 the
founder, Alexander Campbell, met with John Purcell, bishop of Cincinnati Roman
Catholic diocese, for a public discussion of their respective faiths. - Cincinnati: A Guide to the Queen City and Its Neighbors,
Tour 7, pgs. 198 - 199.
The St Louis Church continues as an active parish in the Cincinnati downtown
area. The church no longer has 14 masses on holy days with only 5
conducted now.
