Lewis Grizzard was a columnist for the Atlanta Journal and the Atlanta Constitution, and later for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. His nack for “southern humor” made him extremely popular not only in Atlanta but throughout the south. It was his humor that allowed him to receive national attention as the arthor of more than 25 books, including, “The Tore out My Heart an Stomped That Sucker Flat,” and “Don’t Bend Over in the Garden Granny, Dem Tater’s Got Eye.” Lewis was also a very popular after dinner speaker, often speaking on the two things that he loved the most “The South” and theUniversity of Georgia Football. As a result Lewis was able to make an number of comedy records which were featured on the Southern Tracks Label. During my visit to Lewis’s home town of Moreland, Georgia, I met a gentleman who lived near the cemetery where Lewis is resting, and I think he described Lewis the best when he said, “ Lewis didn’t know what political correctness was, but he sure could make your laugh.” Lewis Grizzard died on March 20, 1994 and he was cremated. Part of his ashes were scattered on the 50-yard line at Sanford Stadium on the Campus of the University of Georgia. The rest are buried in the Moreland Cemetery in Moreland, Georgia.
Description:
Lewis McDonald Grizzard was in Columbus, Georgia on October 20, 1946. As a youngster Lewis and his mother moved to the rural town of Moreland, Georgia. Lewis lived in Moreland until he left to attend the University of Georgia where he graduated with a degree in journalism. At age 23, Lewis was the sports editor for the Atlanta Journal and later left his beloved “south” and traveled north become the sports editor of the Chicago Sun Times. Lewis managed to stay in Chicago for only a short time describing it as the most miserable time of his life, say a number of times “The only thing good coming out of Chicago is Interstate 65 SOUTH”. Lewis returned to Atlanta and took a job as a columnist of the Atlanta Constitution. In 1977 Lewis started writing a humor column fro the Constitiution. This column would make Lewis famous and result in his writing some 25 books of southern humor. Some of his best known titles include, “Don’t bend over in the garden granny, Dem Taters got Eye,” “Elvis is dead and I don’t feel so good myself,” and “The Tore out My Heart an Stomped That Sucker Flat.” Lewis also was quite popular as an after dinner speaker which lead to him cutting several albums for Southern Tracks Record. Many who knew Lewis will tell you that he had only two true loves, The South and University of Georgia Football. Lewis loved the University of Georgia was so great that he often said that when he died he wanted his ashes scattered on the 50-yard line at Sanford Stadium. Lewis suffered from a congenital heart defect that resulted in a number of heart surgeries. In 1994, Lewis entered the hospital form another surgery to replace a defective heart valve. Due to complication from this surgery Lewis Grizzard died on March 20, 1994. True to his wishes, Lewis Grizzard was cremated and half of his ashes were scattered on the 50-yard line at Sanford Stadium and the other half are buried in the Moreland Cemetery in his home town of Moreland, Georgia.
