Daniel Stewart, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, is buried in the Midway Cemetery in Midway, Georgia. In the center of the cemetery is a large monument dedicated to him and General John Screven, who is also buried in this cemetery.

A self-guided tour brochure for the Midway Cemetery (available at the Midway Museum across the street for 25 cents) provides the following information: "Fort Stewart, Georgia was named after this great man. Daniel Stewart, born in St. John's Parish December 20, 1761, joined the Revolutionary Army at the age of fifteen. He fought under Sumter and Marion. He especially distinguished himself in the Indian Wars after the Revolution and was made a Brigadier General. Later he served in the Legislature for a number of years. He was the great-grandfather of President Theodore Roosevelt."
