Walking into Rutts Hutt is like walking back into time, as the decor probably hasn't changed much since like 1956.
The menu is varied with items ranging from pot roast, to roast duckling, but what most people come here for are the hot dogs. Proclaimed Jersey's "Top Dog" by the Newark Star Ledger and at the top of most hot dog aficionado's lists, Rutts Hut's dogs are deep fried and served with an outstanding relish (even if you don't like relish, you must try it) and some excellent mustard. Try to put ketchup on a Rutt's hot dog and you just might be run out of the place.
Served with fries, or the outstanding onion rings, it's certainly an artery clogging meal, but one that is worth every last millimeter of plaque build up.
Most customers order a "ripper", which is a dog fried until the skin rips open. An "In and Outer" is a dog cooked just well enough to be edible. A "weller" is a hot dog well done and a "creamator" is one that spent a little too much time in the fryer and is hard and shriveled (some people actually like it this way).
Rutt's Hut has a walk up counter, a restaurant section and a full service bar, with stools populated largely by gray haired men with fading tattoos. On nice days the parking lot is a popular spot for people to polish off their dogs while enjoying the view of Route 21 and the Passaic River, or the antique automobile meet that happens every Tuesday evening in the summer.
Walk up to the counter and order 2 rippers, onion rings and a beer and you will be in hot dog heaven. Be prepared to go back for one more. Most people do.
