The mountain is named for the town of Jay, which in turn is named for New York's John Jay (1745–1829), one of the "founding fathers" of the United States, and is part of the northern Green Mountains. Most of the mountain is in Jay Peak State Forest but, despite the name, the actual summit is in Westfield.
Jay Peak Ski Resort occupies the eastern side of the mountain, and Vermont's Long Trail crosses the summit. One can hike up, or ride the Resort's gondola to the summit.
