Built with a $40,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie, the Port Huron Library was open to the public for 63 years. The building was opened on 26 May 1904, with a keynote address delivered by a library legend, Melvil Dewey, famous for creating the Dewey Decimal system. In 1967, the public library relocated to a larger building on McMorran Boulevard. The old library was threatened with demolition, but was rescued and given new life as the Museum of Arts and History. The Carnegie Center is now the main building in the Port Huron Museum, which has grown to include the Huron Lightship, the Thomas Edison Depot Museum, the USCG cutter
Bramble, and the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse Historical Site.
The Carnegie Center displays thousands of local history artifacts. One topic of special interest is maritime history. This building is open 11 am – 5 pm, seven days a week.
