What started before the War Between the States as Smyth's School house became a religous center for the community (Smyth Chapel District). In 1861, Aunt Bettie Smyth took up money to build a proper church building. It was completed in 1862. Named for the District and family who also helped found Emory and Henry College. The church and the college are still associated together to this day.
