The Chick House is a three story brick building built in 1857 and is one of three pre-Civil War commercial building is downtown Rockford. The building was built as hotel and is simple in decoration. Rockford being located about half way between Chicago and at the time booming mining town of Galena became a busy stage coach stop. The Chick House was originally Griggs House and operated under that name until 1888 when the building was purchased by Thomas Chick, a former railroad engineer. The Chick House was sold in 1923 by the widow of Thomas Chick and it continued to operate as the Chick House until 1928. In 1928 the hotel closed for renovations and reopened in 1929 as the Elms Hotel. The building also housed various commercial businesses. The Elms Hotel remained in business until 1951. The building has housed various commercial businesses since.
