In 1874, the Brenham Hook and Ladder Company bought their first truck. It was a handed down piece of equipment made in Richmond, Indiana, costing $489.25. At one time there were several fire fighting companies competing to be the first to get to the scene of the fire. On occasions there were fights among the groups to see who would be putting out the fire. In both 1873 and 1877, there were two major fires in Brenham that destroyed many businesses. The firemen decided that better equipment would be needed in combating fires in two storied buildings. In 1879, a Silsby Steamer (Pumper) was purchased from a company in Seneca, New York, at a cost of $3,000.00. This elegant steamer could be drawn by hand or by horses. When horses were used, I am sure it was a thrilling sight to see them roaring down the street. Because the horses were not always in use, it was decided by the city to have them pull the city’s garbage wagon. However, if the alarm for a fire did ring, the horses would immediately “take off” for the fire station, spreading garbage all over Brenham.
