The synagogue in Zagreb was built in 1867 and was designed by architect Franjo Klein. It was demolished in 1941-1942 by fascist regime in Croatia. A parking lot now occupies the site where synagogue once stood.

About 25,000 Jews lived in Croatia on the eve of World War II. About 5,000 Croatian Jews survived the Holocaust. Most were either in the Italian-occupied zone or were fighters in anti-fascist partisan units.
