The Museum is located in the East India Company´s vast office and warehouse building, built 1747-62. The museum has a number of permanent exhibitions. Here you can for example find Äskekärrsskeppet, the only ship from the Viking era on display in Sweden. The middle Ages are full of ecclesiastical history, with discoveries from Gothenburg´s pioneers and their contacts with Western Europe.
The 17th-centuryexhibition, when the city was founded, offers high quality handcrafts and a model of the earlier city. In the 18th century, you can see what it was like to be on the company´s adventurous sea voyages to China, and see porcelain and other luxury goods.
20th century Gothenburg can be experienced through its industrial and theatrical history. The exhibits have English captions.
The City Museum also hosts a lot of temporary exhibitions.
