German-born Eugene W. Hilgard was a professor of Agriculture and Botany at U.C. Berkeley from 1875 to 1904 and was Director of the California State Agricultural Experiment Station. Hilgard, an expert on soil chemistry, is considered the father of modern soil science in the USA.
The building is part of a trio including Wellman Hall and Giannini Hall that form the original agricultural quad on campus. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
