Southwaite Bridge is one of the old county bridges. That is maintained by the county bridge engineer.

The bridge is wonderfully constructed from a mixture of local stone. A local limestone for the main arches and walls with a red sandstone for the coping stones. There are two main arches with a little arch on either side. The river is quite wide at this point, and may have been a ford to the nearby mill. The bridge would have been single cart wide initially, widened for modern vehicle traffic.

There is a stone inscription in the centre of the downstream wall. It reads.

Builder"
