The John Randolph was the first Ironclad ship in American waters. It was built in 1834 in Savannah, GA. This tablet commemorates the event and is located beside the Bay St entrance door to City Hall.

Built for Gazaway B. Lamar, Banker and Cotton Merchant of Savannah.
The same great iron shipbuilder John Laird built in 1862 the Confederate Cruiser "ALABAMA""
