According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.
In Damascus, the TransAmerica Trail crosses the Appalachian Trail; they run roughly in parallel and intermittently cross for 225 miles northeast to Rockfish Gap.
The area can also be traversed by the Appalachian Trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Trans-America National Bicycle Trail, the Iron Mountain Trail, the Daniel Boone Trail, the Crooked Road Musical Heritage Trail, Virginia's Birding and Wildlife Trail, and lies within a short distance of hundreds of miles of other hiking, horse, and biking trails.The town is rapidly becoming a major tourist destination for those seeking a way into the wilderness.
