George Washington was a vestryman of the first Anglican church, a wooden building built at this site in 1734. That building was replaced by the present red brick church constructed 1767-1769. It is the oldest remaining church building north of Quantico in Virginia.

During the Revolutionary War the church served as a militia recruiting station. After the war and the abandonment of the Anglican church in America the building was unused until about 1800 when it was re-established, under the leadership of Francis Scott Key and Henry Fairfax. During the civil war the church was was used as a hospital and a stable. Repairs were made after the war and the building has served an active congregation since 1973.

The original building retains the 1769 construction. A new chancel was added at the east end in 1959 and in the 1990 a new sanctuary and an educational wing were added east of the original structure. These have retained the simple architectural style of the first church. The churchyard, which has gravestones dated back to the early 1800s, has two enormous White Oak trees.
