The chimera are griffins guarding the entrance to the vault where the remains of the Montagu family are located. The Montagus were owners of Kimbolton Castle (the main estate of the area) for nearly 350 years. There is also a crest on the doorway below the griffins.

The vault, underneath the church was extended in 1853 and the floor above it raised 1 metre. 40 years after this the doorway outside the church was added.
