Arthur Fiedler was the long-time conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. He held that post from 1930 to his death in 1979. Millions of Americans were introduced to orchestral music through the Evening at Pops series shown on PBS for many years. He was also associated with other orchestras, including 26 summers with the San Francisco Orchestra.
The statue itself is a large bust made up entirely of flat sections. While it produces an abstract, "out-of-focus" appearance, the face is still distinctly recognizable as that of Fiedler. It is located on the Charles River Esplanade near the Hatch Shell where the Boston Pops continues to provide free outdoor concerts.
