The Boise Diversion Dam was built to redirect water from the Boise River into the New York canal. Construction on the New York Canal began during 1882. The canal at that time was a massive construction project to provide needed irrigation water to hundreds of Boise Valley farms. When the canal's head gates opened in February 1909, farmers celebrated as water flowed to more than 300,000 acres of farmland. The canal ends at Lake Lowell in the city of Nampa.
